Why I Created the Artist Saver™

Why I Created the Artist Saver™

By Bradley Hamilton, Founder of Halico Art, LLC and Creator of Artist Saver™

Paint More. Waste Less. Create Freely.

As a professional oil painter, I've spent countless hours working on paintings, mixing colors, and trying to capture just the right light, shadow, and detail. Painting is something I'm passionate about, but there's one frustration I've experienced repeatedly: returning to my studio only to discover that the oil paints I carefully mixed have started drying out.

If you're an oil painter, you probably know exactly what I'm talking about.

You spend valuable time mixing the perfect colors for a painting. You finally achieve the right combination of pigments, values, and tones. Then life happens. Maybe you have to return to work, spend time with family, or simply step away from the easel for a few days.

When you return, some of those carefully mixed colors have developed a skin or become unusable.

Now you're throwing away expensive paint and spending more time trying to recreate colors you already had.

I kept thinking there had to be a better way.

The Problem Every Oil Painter Understands

Oil painting requires patience, preparation, and attention to detail. Unlike some other painting mediums, oil paints allow artists to work with their colors over extended periods.

But that doesn't mean those colors will last indefinitely on an exposed palette.

As oil paint reacts with oxygen, it gradually begins to cure. Depending on the pigment, medium, and environmental conditions, paint can develop a skin before you're ready to use it again.

For me, this wasn't just about wasting paint.

It was about losing time.

It was about interrupting the creative process.

And it was about the frustration of having to remix colors when I would rather be painting.

Quality oil paints aren't inexpensive. When you're working with professional artist materials, throwing away unused paint can become a costly habit.

I wanted to find a way to change that.

An Idea Born in My Own Studio

I began asking myself a simple question:

What if I could reduce the amount of air surrounding my oil paints while they weren't being used?

That question eventually became the foundation for the Artist Saver™.

I didn't want another ordinary palette box or plastic container. I wanted something specifically designed around the way oil painters work.

Something practical.

Something simple to use.

And most importantly, something that could help preserve the paints artists have already invested their time and money into mixing.

The concept was straightforward: create a compact palette preservation system that allows artists to reduce the air inside a sealed container.

By reducing the amount of air surrounding the paint, the Artist Saver™ is designed to help slow the oxidation process responsible for oil paint curing.

The goal was never to make paint last forever. It was to give artists a better opportunity to preserve their colors between painting sessions.

Turning an Idea Into a Real Product

Having an idea is one thing. Turning that idea into a manufactured product is something entirely different.

Developing the Artist Saver™ has involved designing, prototyping, testing, working with manufacturers, and refining the product to make it practical for everyday studio use.

I wanted a system that would accommodate a standard 9 × 12-inch palette surface without requiring artists to completely change their painting habits.

The design incorporates a sealing gasket, a manually operated pump, a locking mechanism, and an air release valve.

Each component serves a purpose: making paint preservation more convenient and accessible.

There have been challenges along the way, and the development process has required a significant personal and financial commitment from my family.

But I believe in what we're creating.

Because I'm not developing a product simply to put another item on an art supply shelf.

I'm developing something I wish I had when I started oil painting.

More Than a Product: The Beginning of Halico Art

My experiences as a United States Army veteran have shaped how I approach challenges, commitment, and responsibility.

Military service taught me the importance of perseverance, problem-solving, and following through on something you believe in.

Those values have carried into my life as an artist and entrepreneur.

Through Halico Art, LLC, I wanted to create a company that combines two things that are personally important to me: supporting artists and honoring military veterans.

That commitment is reflected in our mission:

Honoring Veterans. Creations for Artists.

Artist Saver™ represents the first step in that mission.

Our goal is to develop useful products that solve real problems for artists while building a business that can also give back to disabled veterans and veteran families.

As Halico Art grows, we hope to support reputable veteran organizations and eventually pursue opportunities to manufacture our products in the United States.

For me, success isn't measured only by the number of products we sell.

It's also measured by the difference we can make.

Giving Artists More Time to Create

Every artist has a different reason for painting.

Some paint professionally. Others paint for relaxation, personal expression, or simply because creating something brings them happiness.

But we all share one thing: our time at the easel matters.

When I sit down to paint, I want to focus on the painting in front of me.

I don't want to spend the first part of every session scraping dried paint from my palette and trying to recreate colors I mixed days earlier.

That's the problem I set out to solve.

I believe that even small improvements in an artist's workflow can make a meaningful difference over time.

Less wasted paint.

Less unnecessary preparation.

More continuity between painting sessions.

And ultimately, more time doing what we love.

My Promise to Fellow Artists

The Artist Saver™ began with a frustration in my own studio, but I believe its potential extends far beyond my personal painting practice.

My commitment is to continue refining the product, listening to artists, and building something that genuinely improves their creative experience.

I know firsthand how much time, effort, and money artists invest in their work.

If the Artist Saver™ can help preserve even a portion of that investment, then we're moving in the right direction.

I'm proud of what we've started with Halico Art, and I'm looking forward to sharing the Artist Saver™ with painters who understand exactly why I created it.

Because at the end of the day, my goal is simple:

Spend less time replacing paint and more time creating art.

Thank you for being part of this journey.
